    Hi Guys & Gals,

I'm going to make the jump to an Intel SSD this weekend to replace my stock 320GB (5400 RPM) Drive in the 2010 Mac Mini.

Those of you that have actually done this, did you find that the Logic Board really needed to be shifted at all? I've been looking at the OWC installation Video and it would seem to me that the drive will lift out over the Logic Board without moving the board at all. It would mean that I would only have to detach the first SATA and two heat connectors. The least amount of connectors I have to pull the better I would assume. Also, I'm thinking that the black vinyl covering wrapped around the 320GB drive is there to protect the moving/electrical drive components on the bottom of the drive, which I would not need on the SSD. I know that I need/should replace the piece of tape to hold the heat sensor wire on the new SSD.

    Any help would be great.....:)

    2010 Mac Mini (2.4MHz - 8GB RAM Intel 80GB SSD(pending)) Air Port Extreme, 2TB Mini Stack External Dive, 16GB WiFi iPad, 32GB iPhone 3GS.

I have not done an SSD per say, but I have made a little side business upgrading the hard drive on 2010 Mac Mini's and selling them on ebay. After having done 10 or so of these, yes you do need to pull the logic board out slightly. The hard drive will not lift up enough to give you the angle you need clear the logic board with out pulling it out.

That said, only pull it out enough to see a small gap of air between the black beisl in the rear and the alum case.

WRT the heat sensors... I have found that the smallest amount of rubber cement works well if you you loose the adhesive when transferring the sensor. 8/10 times you will have plenty of stick left though and wont need to add any.

The black cover I have also assumed was there for air flow as well. If the SSD has a smooth surface, and no logic board to short, you probably can do away with it.

Personally i think that they both should just play nice.

I mean why doesn't Apple just do what they did with the Apple TV. Throw the Apple Logo in front of it. Then Linksys should do the same.

Holy crap! Welcome back! Where the hell have you been, man? We missed you!

EDIT- Oh, and thanks for the support. :)

    Thanks!

Been? Running around trying to get people to be a bit more . . . reasonable. Some successes, some failures.

And you're welcome re support! I just wish it were not an issue . . .

How has it been here? I think it was just short of 3 years.

My brother-in-law pre-ordered online for he and his sister. We are going to the store around 4pm Friday (after work, travel, etc..). If the phones are there, they're there. If they're not, they're not. I'm on the fence of whether or not I want to go with the 3Gs, but the two of them are dead set on it. i am more interested in checking out the new MBAs while I am there, and quizzing the staff to see if any of them have a clue about the 1.5G/s SATA issue on the MBPs :D

So is everyone gonna have to change their checkout page from "buy this song" to "license this song"?

So it will be interesting if the licencing allows the user to hold the content without a licence (just as a car can be held without having a driving licence).

This means that content could be distributed legally without the need of distributors. Then only when you listen to it do you require a licence to listen to it.

No copyright theft, just unlicenced use. So will the record industry attempt to become the sole licence issuer - you can bet on it..

Although that does not prevent the licence from stating that you cannot copy it etc. So what's interesting is - who is going to read the billion different licences that will now bombard the user? This is a change without the rules inplace to protect the public. This has now made the purchasing of music online unfeasable for the public user and you will have to buy through a provider because of the legal minefield.

That is *if* you have agreed to the licence. Is there a law requiring you to have a licence to listen to music? Not that I'm aware of... it would then fall on the music owner to prove on each case that you're an unlicenced individual and that they have to then show how much they'd loose in revenue to the judge... so the value (cost per track) is really low although you may end up with the legal fees..

Or am I barking up the wrong tree?

most TVs don't include an audio in port for the HDMI.

    you can use something like
this (http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=101&cp_id=10114&cs_id=1011405&p_id=5369&seq=1&format=2) - a dvi and digital audio combiner, that outputs HDMI.
and one of these (http://www.monoprice.com/products/subdepartment.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10229&cs_id=1022902) toslink to mini cable to connect audio from your computer to the box.
and one of these (http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10209&cs_id=1020901&p_id=2685&seq=1&format=2) dvi cables to connect your computer to the box.

you'll also need an HDMI male to male, to plug the box into your TV.

also look at your TV manual, or if you're using an external stereo that has digital inputs. the toslink to mini cable might come in handy.

FWIW, I use that specific box (http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=101&cp_id=10114&cs_id=1011405&p_id=5369&seq=1&format=2) referenced by waw74. Works just fine on my Mac Pro.

Are you wanting just one world-editable article each week, or a few? I think having about 5 per week would be more advantageous since a single article represents such a small portion of the Guides, and we have enough people to watch over changes. There are only so many improvements that can be made to one article, so a week seems like a long time to focus on a single page. Take for example the Aperture article, which has only had one change in the last 6 days yet has been the only featured guide during that period.

Finally, would there be a set time each week for the article selection to change, and would it be just you or all the sysops choosing them? If the latter, would there be prior discussion as to which articles to select (eg in the WorldEdit talk page), or would sysops just add articles without consultation?

I think 5-7 articles a week would be great to have world-editable.

I think that Tuesday would be... a fitting day to change the guides. And talking about them first would be MUCH better than random addition. :)

(Yeah, this is an old thread, but I've been in Israel for the past 10 days...)

I'm pretty good programming in PHP and Javascript, but now I need something that allows me to create simple desktop apps. Mostly it will be for automation scripts, too much for Apple Script, but not complex enough to jump into Cocoa and Objective-C. Examples: Manipulating text files (sorting, dupe line checking, adding/cutting parts, splitting/combining files etc.), uploading a file to several different FTP servers, sending POST requests to a server.

I often hear Pearl and Python mentioned and I believe they are pre-installed on the Mac, but I don't know much about them. What's the main difference? Which one (or something else?) would be best suited for these tasks? Which one is easier to learn?

Bonus: What's a good site to learn for someone who has general programming knowledge, but is a total noob with those languages?

The stuff used on the heatsink is NOT an adhesive. It is just a compound that maximises the heat transfers between CPU and heatsink. The heatsink MUST be held down with the screws.

From the looks of it, you've either got a damaged bottom case (screw mount knocked off) or a bottom case for the wrong model (slightly different fittings).

Get the Crucial 1333MHz, as you need that speed definitely for your iMac, and I assume your laptop uses it as well. If your laptop uses the slower speed, it will not work in your iMac

No, I guess not. I could probably do copy and paste. I was trying to use the screen shot feature instead to see how it works.

When you took the screenshot, the shot screen loads in a new Preview window. Press CMD+A, then CMD+C to copy it.
Or use the shortcuts listed here (http://guides.macrumors.com/Taking_Screenshots_in_Mac_OS_X).
