    I have it on ebay:
    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=5841189311&ssPageName=STRK:MESE:IT

I'd be willing to end the auction early for $45 Shipped.

I'm open to trades, I'm especially looking for nice earbuds to go with my new ipod.

Does anyone know if there is a way to remove the 4GB / 50 minute video recording cap? I used Greenpois0n to jailbreak, even though that likely makes no difference. I thought maybe there was something I could install to remove the cap.

Those Safari updates? I would expect no less!!

If Safari didn't at least keep up with FireFox, then shame Apple. At best Safari should innovate just as much as Apple claims. How about CoverFlow for cached pages?

The iPod touch probably has iOS 4.1, which can be jailbroken using limera1n. If you'd like to update to iOS 4.2, you can, but your jailbreak will be tethered.

Not true.. I am the Art Director for a Art department that makes grocery store ads.

Soda is not a common loss leader since it's DSD Pepsi/Coke keep close price controls.

I usually see produce and meat used as loss leaders..

All food margins are bad for grocery stores...they end up making the most money off of their non-food items...which is why you often see a growing number of non-food aisles.

Another point... I expect that TJ MAXX just bought up a bunch of the Refurbished iPads and is taking a $50 loss on each to get people in the stores.

    they are new iPads.

    Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8B117 Safari/6531.22.7)

Finally TJMaxx finally got the attention they wanted without spending thousands of dollars in advertising.

Well they did pay money for it. They are probably losing between $70-$100 on each iPad.

Here's a piece done by Fortune posted just a few minutes ago referring to the TJ Maxx thing:
    http://tech.fortune.cnn.com/2010/11/19/how-to-get-on-steve-jobs-naughty-list/

I seriously doubt the figure of "80 iPads total" aquired by TJ Maxx that is speculated in the article, but who knows.

I think he meant 8,000. I did the math myself. All you do is count the number of stores east of colorado or so. I estimate 50%-60% of stores got 10 iPads each...throw in some Marshalls stores...and you get between 5,000 - 10,000 iPads.

(notice how some Marshalls stores are holding off on their iPads until Black Friday...maybe they are apple users who actually figure out they have a prized possession...i can see most managers just saying..what are these ipads..lets just give them away).

The whole notion that Europeans drive smaller cars because their streets are narrow is partially myth. Don't forget - Europe has modern cities with divided highways too, just like the US does. It is true that many cities and towns in Europe are more compact because of their age (Americans who live in certain parts of Boston or Philadelphia will be familiar with what 17th century streets look like). But the smaller size of cars in Europe is more closely related to the austerity of the post-WWII years setting a standard of smaller cars, fuel prices being higher, and higher taxes for larger cars.

Sat in the new Passat at the NAIAS this weekend because of this thread. Its a nice car, roomy, comfortable, kind of "mean" looking on the outside. I liked it.

I won't be able to look at one in the flesh till they hit dealers. The success of the new Passat will depend on how many new buyers Volkswagen lures, since that was the purpose of the "decontenting".

As an aside, I wish they'd bring the Golf GTD over here. I would be strongly tempted to buy one.

Sweet. But, there's more to just piggybacking on your mac's airport connection to make calls. I think more has to be done to make this networking possible.

There are already wi-fi enabled phones that can make Skype calls if you have a wi-fi connection. This is nothing new or groundbreaking.

Well this certainly beats that ipod integration nonsense. MP3 player phones are a dime a dozen, I'd rather see great communication device that take how the user communicates to the next level, not just stuff a music player in it.

MP3 player phones are a dime a dozen and also *hugely* popular. Look at how well the LG Chocolate is doing with their craptacular phone. The iPhone *must* have iPod integration to be a success, IMO. At minimum it must have seamless iPod integration and a decent-to-good phone experience. Everything else is gravy.

Many manufacturers already do this with their unlocked phones - but they just store the settings on the phones (no need to connect to a computer).
Manufacturers selling unlocked phones is common elsewhere and is now already beginning in the States.
This won't fly - usage is terrible and would make dialing slower than it currently is. And texting would truly suck.

In fact, Sony launched their w800i phone unlocked in the U.S. (was only availalbe from the Sony Style store). The thing is, at $500 it was extremely cost-prohibitive and definitely aimed at technology early adopters. I'm sorry, but phones are just too darn expensive at full retail price. Apple *needs* the subsidy for signing a new contract. That's the only thing that will make the price competitive for the mass market. I expect Apple will partner with T-Mobile and/or Cingular, and that the phone will be available for no more than $300 with new contract (and even that is expensive by today's standards).

Do you mean latency? evdo gives up to 3mbps in urban areas. That should be plenty.

EV-DO is not available on GSM networks in the US. As far as I know the GSM providers (basically T-Mobile and Cingular) are using HSDPA for their 3G network. And everything I've heard about it has been good. The early reports on the Cingular 3G network are that it's quite zippy and handles streaming video just fine...

I also like the idea of using the click wheel to make a retro style digital-rotary phone. However, I doubt Apple would just display the numbers on the screen and not on the unit. So when in dial mode, you would spin the click wheel and the numbers, displayed on the display in a circle, would highlight the number that you were on and then click the center button on the click wheel to select. If you wanted to get really old school, you could have the rotary sounds come through the headphones. Or course you would still be able to dial by your address book or search through a downloaded version of the white or yellow pages (which would naturally sync into your phone whenever you charge it at home, via blue tooth or direct connection to your computer).

Text messaging is extremely popular and I just don't see Apple crippling text messaging on the iPhone. Can you see inputting a 120-character text message on a "rotary-style" interface? Yeah, I can't either. Any kind of rotary interface on the iPhone is a non-starter idea, IMO.

P.S. The title of this thread is: "iChat Phone from Apple?". Kind of implies that there must be as simple, fast way to input text, right? I'm thinking a full qwerty keyboard is a definite possibility...

this might be OT, but the castle thing made me think of a few other points too. Apologies in advance.

    1. MobileMe should NOT be rebranded. They can "add cloud castle level security" whatever, but keep it simple. MobileMe has great recognition (if a subpar rep, but see AppleTV) attached to it.

    2. MobileMe should be worth the money. It is currently a ripoff when so much else is free. Apple should give a small wifi dropbox style sync for free among apple products (like dropbox) under the MobileMe name, and a wifi sync for iphone (free). This is not "entitlement", this is a basic functionality in 2011.

    3. MobileMe+, for $7/month, should be wifi and 3G, increase the dropbox-style storage, give you direct web access to the storage, add better encryption, and OTA calendar and email syncing. It could also permit backing up Keychain, bookmarks, contacts and emails into one big "Rolodex" file, but just a thought.

    4. With Lion, The App stores and software updates should all be joined into one store and become a separate app from itunes. I really, REALLY hope this is the way they are going. This is my number one request. When I want to update, I used to just do Software Update. Now I have to do Software Update, iTunes, and the App Store.

    5. Time Machine should have an advanced mode (yes, I know thats not what its for) to be like SuperDuper and allow scheduled mirroring.

Not that anyone from apple is going to read this but whatever

Growl (http://growl.info) is a global notification system for Mac OS X. Any application can send a notification to Growl, which will display an attractive message on your screen.

Try it! Its free and from the makers of Adium and you'll love it!
I use it to notify me of iTunes track changes, new mail and Adium notifications.

My mac is 31 months old and I just brought a external harddrive to back it up among other things. The harddrive needs to be reformitted (its a WD Elements 1.5 TB) and I can not find my disk utility anywhere. I went to applications -utilities and I can not find it. Where can I find my disk utility? How can I recover it? Thanks in advanced.

I loved the keynote and am quite excited about the Widescreen WiFi iPod Video (which also happens to be a phone and an internet communicator). Even the price is fine with me. I was expecting it to be more expensive. Since I'm a Cingular customer already and my contract expired 4 months ago, I'm pretty happy with the announcement!

The spotlight was entirely on the iPhone today, and I'm okay with that.

We'll hear about Leopard, iLife, iWork, and Mac updates soon enough, but the real excitement is no longer in annual incremental updates to these products.

If the keynote had featured only these existing products, that would have been horrendously disappointing.

Instead, Apple delivered a great show and they will deliver updates to existing products soon.

But for today the spotlight is on only one thing: iPhone.

How can anyone see this as great news?

    its an UPGRADE...not a transfer, not a conversion, not a migration...an UPGRADE.

For Apple Upgrade = $$$. Simply put, we're probably once again going to be shafted by an idiotic $100 /year fee for a slow iDisk replacement...think I'll stick with S3 for now!

The preconceptions that lead you to reject it are not the same as it "not working."

You mean the preconception that a business suit is normal attire and has no logical comparison with the topic at hand? Yep.
