But IMHO, Apple is a little weak in the video card dept. still. The Mac Mini now costs $100-200 more than it did when it came out, and you still get wimpy, non-upgradeable graphics in it. The Core Duo 2 CPU in one *really* starts to make that look lopsided. Even the iMacs could use something like Radeon X1900XT's in them - because the home market they target includes a lot of teens who want to play games on the computer.

And I'm *really* hoping they start doing more to get software ported to OS X. The ability to boot into Windows shouldn't become an excuse for developers not to make native OS X versions of software. I barely ever boot into XP on my Mac Pro because I like the OS X environment so much better. So the games I tend to play on it are the ones like "Call of Duty 2" I have for OS X.

Good points. Apple are doing great, but the lack of dedicated graphics in consumer-priced Macs aimed at switchers & students, many of whom will already own PC games, is an oversight. Otherwise, Apple's marketshare could be far higher.

Also, as 0010101 posted earlier, there'll be huge numbers of people holding back from buying PCs due to Vista's delay. Let's see if Apple can repeat their current success next year, when millions of PCs pre-loaded with Vista hit the shops. IMO, without significant upgrades to consumer-priced Macs, Apple's marketshare is unlikely to continue growing beyond the busy pre-Xmas retail season.

Give her some of her own medicine. When you notice her noticing you, before she can turn to make it to the backroom, let out an ungodly scream of, "Oh my god, she's in bed with the CIA and has bugged my house in order to know when I will be coming to the Apple Store so that she can be here before me!" and turn and run out of the store, making sure you run into any cardboard displays as well as the security machines that beep when you try to steal stuff. That way she'll know how it feels to be indirectly accused of being a creepy stalker.

I'll be there, either at five-ish or four. Are there going to be more than five hundred people queuing before opening? Given the number of online orders, I don't know...

Synchro, I was there too! Got there about 5:45am thanks to the reliability of this country's transport system when no-one's using it (:P) and the queue was mind-bogglingly huge then. I got a t-shirt then, though! :D

I need to pick up not one, but two (honesty to the extreme) Leopard family packs does anyone think Apple will take pity on me and give me two shirts (one for the person I'm buying a family pack for)?

I checked the update pace for Mac OS X 10.4.
    29/04/2005: 10.4.0
    17/05/2005: 10.4.1 (+ 18 days)
    12/07/2005: 10.4.2 (+ 56 days)
    31/10/2005: 10.4.3 (+ 111 days)
    11/01/2006: 10.4.4 (+ 72 days)
    14/02/2006: 10.4.5 (+ 34 days)
    03/04/2006: 10.4.6 (+ 48 days)
    27/06/2006: 10.4.7 (+ 85 days)
    27/09/2006 (today) + 92 days

Soon we'll have 10.4.8, and then probably around 3 months later 10.4.9 (January?). I doubt Apple will release 10.4.10, they could but I don't think they ever did it with another OS.

I thought first that it could mean that Leopard would be early, but I don't think so (spring 2007 is March 21 - June 21).

That's better, not that it really matters... ;)

Gutted I didn't get a free T-Shirt, they were all sold out when I got in. I arrived earlier than expected, pretty much bang on 6. An Apple Store employee came out and told us we were queuing in the wrong bit, it was at that point everyone realized the queue went round the entire block!

Installing Leopard as we speak, only just got in, spent all night at the Studio talking! (Apologies to the friendly Apple employees my friend and I were talking to all night propping up the bar!).

Dam tubes getting slower at night time!

Was quite interesting seeing the diversity, I enjoyed it, just wish I had a T-shirt.

Was there much chatting in the line or were people keeping themselves to themselves?

I thought it was revolutionary - the idea that you always start with a template and never with a blank document. I thought - wow, all these years and Microsoft didn't come up with this?

But after trying to use it, it was non-intuitive and I gave up after about 10 minutes.

Word does actually start with a template rather than a blank document. Its name is normal.dot and you can change it anyway you like (put some formatting, text, headers and footers on it ...) and save it. Its a template like any other Word template you can create or use.

Redheads are a bit more sensitive to anesthesia (not sure why, but apparently it's true), but that isn't an issue unless your anesthesiologist is color-blind. ;)

Timely mention. There was an interesting article about this in yesterday's Guardian.

The important pieces to note about the marketshare is that this definitely is coming from switchers, not from upgraders. If you look at the data, you will see that it's broken up between MacOS and MacIntel. The data for MacOS is just PPC people, and that actually remained constant throughout the year:
    http://marketshare.hitslink.com/chartfx62/temp/CFT1102_0428382CEA7.gif

while the marketshare for MacIntel has been a nice parabolic curve:

The only way to do it, as far as I know, is to actually go and edit the "Adobe Illustrator Prefs" file (in Library/Preferences/Adobe Illustrator CS5 Settings/en_US) with TextEdit.

Use search to find this line: "/maxRecentFiles 10". Below it you will see a list of the recent file represented in a bunch of characters.

What a mess, eh? So much for including a simple "Clear Menu" command in the application, as every true Mac app does. Windows users seem to have it worse, as they have to modify the registry for this (see (http://forums.adobe.com/thread/458899)).

The funny thing is that Photoshop actually has the "Clear recent" option, but neither Illustrator, InDesign nor Fireworks do.

It was what I was expecting to be honest - a slightly smaller 360. Not crazy small, just a little bit.

Built in 802.11n is a nice touch, seeing as MS charge insane money for their WiFi adapters, and they have been playing catch up to the PS3 (especially the Slims) for built in features.

Stuff I don't like? Gloss! Sony realised glossy didn't work that well and went to matte, but MS have done the opposite. Still stuck with a custom HDD, which will no doubt be overpriced for replacements.

    Will I get one?
Probably not. I've got a recent FF XIII Super Elite 360, so this offers me very little - literally built in WiFi vs. my adapter, and power/noise. Not worth the money.

Have you ever gone to move your finger across the trackpad and find that it registered it as a tap instead? Drives me nuts.

That has never happened to me, or anyone, that is intentionally using Tap to Click.

That does happen to people who live with buttons, who aren't expecting it, and for some reason tend to mash their trackpad with giant gorilla hands.

People I know that use click instead of tap have broken the trackpads on white macbooks after a few years of use.

I also had a general anesthesia done once. Same story as tpjunkie, but my body tried to fight it off. It took them 4 doses from the usual to get me out ( ) Not only that, but I woke up earlier than expected, and in full shape almost right away. Good thing the surgeon also finished early!
    Well, that's my story... :o

Ala Carte Channels would cause some channels to go away, on the other hand it would allow other channels to thrive and flourish, because the channels people really wanted to watch would get the most revenue.

I don't want to overpay for the 10 channels I want so 20 other channels I don't care about can continue to exist. Let the marketplace sort it out. It certainly would not actually make channels appeal to a wider demographic, it would probably be the opposite really, as small strong niches carry the day and carry their channels and the programming.

    Very intelligent post. +1

    http://www.macrumors.com/images/macrumorsthreadlogo.gif (http://www.macrumors.com/iphone/2009/11/05/why-an-rfid-enabled-iphone/)

Multiple reports have come in that Apple is researching (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/11/05/apple-experimenting-with-rfid-enabled-iphone-prototypes/) RFID (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/07/09/new-apple-iphone-patent-applications-surface-object-and-facial-recognition-messaging-voice-modulation/) integration (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/07/02/haptic-feedback-fingerprint-identification-and-rfid-tag-readers-in-future-iphones/) into the iPhone, but some may still be wondering what such functionality would bring to the table for consumers.

Firstly, we should note that RFID is a catch-all term that describes a vast array of technologies and standards. RFID tags can be relatively large and battery-powered, such as ones used in toll collection, to small "passive" tags that can be embedded into credit cards, drivers licenses (called "Enhanced Drivers Licenses" in the U.S.), passports, or stuck onto a piece of merchandise.

Currently, cell-phone usage of RFID technology is centered around Near Field Communication (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Near_Field_Communication) (NFC). NFC has three main usage scenarios: a phone acting as an RFID tag; a phone acting as an RFID reader; and peer to peer communication (P2P).

In RFID tag mode, a phone could be used as a payment device (like a credit card), an identity card, or act as a car key. In RFID reader mode the phone would be able to interact with tags in its vicinity. This article and video (http://www.nearfield.org/2009/04/iphone-rfid-nfc) demonstrates how an iPhone with RFID could use physical objects to control media playback. And in P2P mode, Bluetooth pairing can be streamlined.

These are just a few ways that RFID could be used in an iPhone. When or if it becomes a reality isn't clear, but hopefully now you have a better idea of what the potential is for Apple's research in this area.

A year or two ago I too would have lambasted the decision not to include maps, but having seen how HORRIFICALLY bad Navigon's POI database is I'll gladly take downloaded maps if it means when I search for something I can actually find it. Navigon mitigated this some by utilizing google search, but it's still pathetic that I can't find 80% of the nearby businesses in Navigon.

I've been through 3 Garmin's and loved every one of them. Since my last one was stolen I've lived with Navigon my iPhone. I've never felt it was worth paying for between the horrible iPod integration (volume, podcasts) and pitful POI database.

Assuming there is some caching of maps I think it'll work great, even if the caching isn't persistant (ie. even if it had to download the map from my house to work every day... oh wait I work from home, but you know what I mean right?).

When you release the kinds of game-chaining products that Apple does, I'm kind of inclined to look the other way. Why not. Apple's earned special treatment for the time being. That is, for the time being.

Might doesn't make right. But being exceedingly awesome, does.

I know it sounds unfair, but **** it. Apple's changed the entire conditions of the game.

It doesnt matter what they've done, no company should deserve special treatment.

And "being exeedingly awesome" puts you above the law?

Well that confirms it, *LTD* is 14 years old.
